THE QUESTION OF MAN IN INDONESIAN CONTEMPORARY PAINTING

It is not every day that one can enjoy, in just a few works, a wide range of Indonesian contemporary painting.
Interestingly, and as preliminary remark, four of the five paintings exhibited tell us that the issue of Man is still debated in the country. Look at Ipong’s clown, who tells us, in a world laden with anxiety, that it behooves us to give meaning to life, and this meaning has to be positive.

Dipo Andy is more pessimistic. The figures he represents seem to mean, in a Warhol manner, that we are shaped –we can even say brainwashed- by icons of the media world, therefore limiting our autonomy of thought.
Still of a darker mood, Edo Pillu show us a man, his hand extended forward, ready to grasp, obviously looking for meaning. As for Edo Pop, the world is to him a human machine –a metaphor of a man - controlled world-, but this machine has not meaning and it reduces Man to insignificance. Only with Faisal, the last artist, do we get a work in which the theme, even though it involves human characters, is secondary to the color puzzle.

Faizal
Born in Surakarta (Solo), Central Java (1965).
He studied art in the Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta (Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta) in 1986, where he won two awards for best painting and best sketching. Some lecturers, especially Gunarsa (who is also a national-level artist), gave appreciation to the excellent work of Faizal’s academic projects submitted.
In 1990 he received another award for best painting in the 6th anniversary of ISI.
One of his works earned him the Medaille du Conseil Generale Prix D'Honneur in France in 1991. He participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali, Kuala Lumpur, Amsterdam, France and Singapore. The artist’s freely executed naïve works are full of bright colours which make them very cheerful and attractive. He always likes to show pleasant scenes that are sweet or have the flavour of folk-tales. With this tendency, Faizal has caught the attention of the art world since the 1990s.

Edo Pillu
Born in Bandung, West Java (1969).
Edo Pillu studied sculpture from 1990 to 1997 in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta (Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta). In 1989 he studied at the Institut Seni Desain dan Fotografi (Institute of Design and Photography) in Bandung, West Java.
He held solo exhibitions in Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Surabaya and Beijing, and has participated in group exhibitions in Indonesia, Singapore, Canada, Germany and the USA.
“Almost all my work is subjective, personal views and opinions exploring ideas of existence and mankind as social beings. I want to show a dynamic shift from traditional societies and the fight for the modern existence.” Edo Pillu.

Edo Pop

The Paintings of Eduard have unique qualities full of entangled forms, colours, lines and apparent textures. The artist is strong in his exploration of figures that appear strange and fantastic, a style that he developed around the year 2000.

He focuses his attention on the strength of mass culture in the lives of contemporary people. He combines various popular icons in his work as a part of his communicative art strategy. He criticizes contemporary culture, where even superstars are commercially packaged and appear to be full of illusions.
