Huang Fong

Born in Genteng, Banyuwangi, East Java (1936).

In 1952 when he was attending school in Surabaya, East Java, he met the art teacher Tan Kiaw Tek, who taught him Chinese painting. Huang Fong also attended the Institut Keguruan Ilmu Pendidikan (IKIP, teachers training College) in Surabaya for only ten days in 1957. He had a part- time job in a photography studio and found another outlet for his artistic desire by adding colour to black – and- white photos printed there.

Huang Fong wanted to live in Bali, and since 1967 has made work on paper of people, village scenes and panoramas in pencil, ink, pastel, watercolour and oil paint. In Bali he was one of the founders of the Sanggar Kamboja artists´ group in 1985. The artist discovered how to paint with water colour on canvas prepared for oil paint. By using together the two art styles that he had embraced, Chinese painting and photographic-realism, he created a unique form which established his reputation in the Indonesian art world.
