Santoso Sigit

Born in Ngawi, Central Java (1964).

He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta (Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta) in 1993. Sigit held solo exhibitions in Edwin’s Gallery, Jakarta, Indonesia, and has participated in group exhibitions in Bali, Jakarta, Italy, Korea, Solo, Yogyakarta, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, Tai Pei and Beijing.

In 2006 and 2007 he was in the runner-up in The Sovereign Asian Art Prize, Hong Kong. In 1994 he was within the best 10 of The Phillip Morris Group Indonesian Art Awards, the same year he won best work at Biennale IV, Yogyakarta. In 1992 he won the best work at the Festival of Indonesian Art University Student, and in 1990 the best work at The V Anniversary of ISI, Yogyakarta. The artist is one of the few who has chosen realism as the primary way to express the accuracy of form in this difficult and time consuming technique. He is skilled at composing precise metaphors to express his ideas that are always open to wide interpretations. His paintings are rather surrealistic and imply his comprehension of complex values in life through identity, origins, ironies and contradictions.
